Will Dubai Airport Become the Largest in the World?
Dubai has announced plans to expand Al-Maktoum Airport, including the approval of a new terminal. With a projected cost of over $34.8 billion, the emirate aims to build the largest airport in the world, capable of accommodating 260 million passengers annually.
This new airport will be five times larger than the current Dubai International Airport. Where will the ambition stop? In Dubai, construction projects are always bigger and more ambitious. On Sunday, April 28th, the Emirati city-state announced that Al-Maktoum Airport would soon have a new terminal. The cost of these colossal works is estimated at more than $34.8 billion. The clear objective set by the authorities is to accommodate more and more passengers to become “the largest airport in the world.”
“We have approved the plans for the new passenger terminal at Al-Maktoum International Airport, and construction of the building has begun,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, on X. Once completed, the airport will become “the largest in the world,” added the Dubai ruler, aiming to receive 260 million passengers annually.
Aiming for 150 Million Passengers in the Next Decade
This new airport is set to be five times larger than the current international airport, according to local media. The construction will be carried out in multiple phases, with the first part of the project expected to be completed in ten years, allowing the airport to handle “150 million passengers per year,” stated Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, the Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation and CEO of Emirates Group.
Currently, Al-Maktoum Airport serves a small portion of travelers arriving in or transiting through Dubai. With this expansion project, it aims to take over from Dubai International Airport, which is capped at 120 million passengers annually. Its location in the city center limits any prospects for further expansion, and it is expected to be used less frequently by airlines in the coming years.
Looking to the Future
The ambitious expansion of Al-Maktoum Airport reflects Dubai’s continual drive to break boundaries and set new records. As the city anticipates an influx of 150 million passengers within the next decade, this mega project is poised to redefine air travel and solidify Dubai’s position as a global aviation hub.
